Certificate in Criminal Law
Requirements
To be eligible for a Certificate in Criminal Law, a student must satisfy all the requirements listed below.
A. A student must complete all of the following Criminal Law Core Courses:
1. Criminal Procedure – Investigations
2. Criminal Procedure – Adjudication
3. Either (a) Criminal Law Practice Program; or (b) Public Service Externship placement dealing directly with criminal law, subject to the advanced joint approval of the Director of the Externship Program and the Faculty Coordinator, for a maximum of four credits.
B. A student must complete at least five credits of the following Criminal Law Related Courses:
1. Juvenile Law
2. White Collar Crime
3. Sentencing
4. Money Laundering
5. Tax Fraud
6. Death Penalty
7. Any other course in the area of Criminal Law, including Criminal Procedure, added to the curriculum on an experimental or permanent basis, if approved by the Dean for inclusion as a Criminal Law Related Course.
C. A student must complete one of the following Scholarship Components:
1. Advanced Topics/Seminar in the area of Criminal Law, subject to the approval of the paper topic/project by the Faculty Coordinator, provided that an Advanced Topics/Seminar applied towards the satisfaction of the Scholarship Component in Criminal Law may not be applied towards satisfaction of the Related Course requirement; or
2. Independent research (with paper) in the area of Criminal Law, subject to the approval of the paper topic/project by the Faculty Coordinator; or
3. In connection with service on the Law Review, the submission of a final draft Note or Article in the area of Criminal Law, for publication, if the Faculty Coordinator accepts the final Note or Article as sufficient in length and quality to be counted as completion of the Scholarship Component; or
4. Participation in a Moot Court competition in the area of Criminal Law, if the Faculty Coordinator determines that the amount and quality of the student’s participation has been sufficient to be counted as completion of the Scholarship Component.
D. A student must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in all Criminal Law Core and Related Courses completed, except that a course graded only on a pass/fail basis shall not be included in the grade point computation.
