The Public Interest Fellowship Committee is pleased to announce the availability of Public Interest Summer Fellowships for students working as volunteers or for marginal pay in the public sector. Students enrolled in the Public Service Extern Program and Reinberger Fellows are not eligible to apply for this fellowship award.

For Purposes of this fellowship, a public interest position includes working for an organization providing services to underrepresented clients, groups or interests. (e.g. the poor, elderly, minority groups, etc.)

Application & Selection Criteria:

  1. Before applying, you must have secured a position as a volunteer or for marginal pay in the public sector.

  2. You must commit to work a minimum of 20 hours a week for 10 weeks over the summer in the public interest position.

  3. Criteria that will be considered during the selection process include factors relevant to the student’s commitment to a public service career.  Commitment may be demonstrated by a number of factors, including:
    • Participation in public interest/volunteer activities in college, law school and outside of school
    • Essay describing student’s interest in the practice of public interest law and the relationship of summer employment plans to legal career goals

While demonstrated commitment is a principal criterion for being awarded a fellowship, consideration will also be given to applicants who may not have amassed a substantial public interest record but who have demonstrated their commitment in other ways and/or have explained the circumstances that may have deterred them from participation in such activities in the past in their essay.

Application Process:

Interested students must submit three copies of: 1) a resume, 2) the fellowship application, and 3) a law school transcript in hard copy to the Law Career Services Office by 3:00 PM on Thursday, March 19, 2009.   No application will be accepted after this date and time. 2009 Loyola Patent Law Interview Program:

To:  All Law Students Returning For Fall Semester 2009

Re:  2009 Loyola Patent Law Interview Program

Loyola University Chicago School of law is hosting the 2009 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31 in Chicago, Illinois.  This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students, and students in Intellectual Property LLM programs.

Last year roughly 150 employers, 150 law schools, and 1,500 law students from across the country participated in the program.  The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the resumes of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program.  Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program.  You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

For more information on the program, please refer to the program website at http://www.luc.edu/law/career/Patent_Program_-_Stu.html

Online student registration for this year’s Patent Law Interview Program will begin on Monday, February 23 and close on Thursday, March 12.  On February 23, a “Register Now” link will appear on the above web page.  At this stage of registration, you will only need to enter some basic information (you will upload your resume and bid on interviews later in the semester).  Please note that our school is listed alphabetically as The University of Toledo on the registration form’s drop down menu of law schools.

There is a non-refundable $35 dollar registration fee which you must pay by credit card to complete your online registration.  Please have your credit card ready when you register.

Please direct any questions about the program to the Patent Program Liaison in our office, Jessica Mehl, jessica.mehl@utoledo.edu
