Have You Considered Applying for a Post-Graduate Fellowship? (ATTN. Rising 3L's):

How would you like to design your dream job, and then get paid to do it?  A post-graduate fellowship provides this opportunity.  Many UT Law students have been successful applying for national fellowships, including Equal Justice Works.  (http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/programs/fellowships)

If this sounds like something you would be interested in discussing, please stop in the Law Career Services office or e-mail Jessica Mehl at jessica.mehl@utoledo.edu.

Most national fellowships have an early fall deadline the year before graduation.

(i.e. If you have plans to graduate in May 2009, you would need to apply by Sept. 2008 and should start working on your fellowship application ASAP)

Preparing for Your Summer Positionà Making a Good Impression

The following pointers represent highlights from a professional development session held at the law school on Tuesday, April 1st, 2008. "Preparing for Your Summer" included the following panelists: Cheryl Slotterbeck (Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick); Michael Spiros (Spiros and Stewart; Lambertville, MI); Nathan Boyd (Anspach Meeks Ellenberger); Judge Arlene Singer (OH 6th Dist. Ct. of Appeals); Rob Salem (Clinical Instructor); Katina Werner (EJW/AmeriCorps Legal Fellow)

  • What firms are looking for: smart, hard-working, shows initiative, fun to be around.
  • If you are confused about an assignment, ask for clarification before spending lots of time spinning your wheels.
  • ALWAYS have a legal pad with you to take notes.
  • Edit assignments, and then edit 2 more times before turning them in.  You will be evaluated on the quality of your written work than any other factor.
  • Use your calendar to manage meetings, activities and deadlines.
  • Use electronic communications with care-no slang (IM/text message language).  Some attorneys expect e-mails to be in a form similar to a written formal memorandum. Pay attention to individual style and preferences. When in doubt, formal is always better.
  • Join in on firm social activities and make a conscious effort to get to know everyone.  (Qualifications- no intra-firm dating and no excessive alcohol consumption)
  • Take pride in your appearance/wardrobe.  If in doubt, think conservative.

(Assumption: the quality of your work correlates with how you present yourself)

  • Treat all members of the firm with respect.  Secretaries, general support staff, administrative staff, and associate attorneys often have input into who is hired.
  • Make it a priority to set aside time through-out the summer to meet with your supervisor for the purpose of getting feedback.
