Cook
County Bar Association Minority Law Student Job Fair: REGISTRATION NOW
OPEN
The Cook County
Bar Association is pleased to announce its upcoming 25th
Anniversary Minority Law Student Job Fair. The Job Fair will
be held at the Embassy Suites Downtown/Lakefront Hotel located
at 511 North
Columbus Drive, Chicago, Illinois60611.
The CCBA Job
Fair primarily is designed to obtain summer associate
positions for rising 2Ls (current 1Ls) during their second
summer in law school (summer 2009). A limited number of
employers may also wish to interview rising 3Ls (current 2Ls)
for entry level associate positions which will start after
they take the bar examination (fall 2009). The 2008 Job Fair
will be held on Friday, August 8, 2008, from 8:00 AM to 5:00
PM. We will end this year's Job
Fair by having a 25th Anniversary Reception where students and
employers will have the opportunity to mingle on an informal
basis during the last hour of the Job
Fair.
The Job Fair
typically attracts over 900 students and more than 150 law
firms, corporations, and government agencies. These employers
primarily are located in California, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New
York, Ohio,
Wisconsin, and WashingtonD.C. In addition, we have
several employers registered from Colorado, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, North
Carolina, Oregon,
Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

Legal Assistance Project: Equal
Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow
Position
The Pro
Bono Legal Assistance Project is a collaborative project between the
partner law firms of Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO) and
Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE). The purpose of this
project is to increase opportunities for law students to participate
in pro bono activities while also increasing support and assistance
for volunteer attorneys in LAWO's 32-county service area. The Equal
Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow will cultivate relations with law
school students and faculty, and will work with legal aid staff,
volunteer lawyers, government leaders, court personnel, judges, and
bar leaders in an effort to raise the awareness and visibility of
pro bono work while expanding opportunities for participation. The
Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow will work with law schools to
recruit and train students; work with legal aid staff on special
rural pro bono and low income taxpayer projects; provide referrals
and support to volunteer lawyers; develop community education and
pro se materials; and provide direct legal assistance to low income
clients.
QUALIFICATIONS Attorney
candidates should be admitted to the Ohio Bar or be eligible for
temporary certification in Ohio. Recent law graduates should
be prepared to take and pass the next Ohio Bar exam. Candidates
should also:
·Be
highly motivated and committed to the principle of equal
justice.
·Have
excellent communication skills and enjoy working with people,
especially law students.
·Have
excellent research and writing skills.
·Take
initiative and be a leader.
·Be
creative and willing to accept responsibility for challenging
projects.
·Have
good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple
tasks.
·Ability
to speak Spanish is helpful.
BENEFITS Compensation
is set by Federal statute. For each year of service, an Equal
Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow will
receive:
·A living
allowance up to $22,800 per year.
·Health
insurance and eligibility for child care
assistance.
·A $4,725
education award from AmeriCorps.
·Loan
forbearance and interest accrual payment for government student
loans.
·Loan
repayment assistance from the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation up to
$6,000 per year.
·Actual
moving expense and Bar admission assistance up to
$3,500.
·Participation
in LAWO's comprehensive substantive and skills training
program.
·Payment
of local bar dues.
·Travel
reimbursement.
·The
opportunity to join a staff of outstanding and experienced advocates
in a law firm with an outstanding
reputation.
The Seventh District
Court of Appeals in Youngstown is accepting
applications for a full-time (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4
p.m.) position of judicial law clerk. The ideal candidate must
possess excellent research and writing skills, be self-sufficient
and have a strong academic background. The candidate must be a
current member in good standing of the Ohio
bar. Starting salary is $45,000.

Summer
interns at IMLAP work with Spanish-speaking migrant
farmworkers in Illinois. IMLAP has
been at the forefront of farmworker litigation for decades
providing legal representation to migrant and seasonal
farmworkers harvesting crops, detasseling corn, or cultivating
nursery products throughout Illinois. Interns will
be stationed in one of four satellite offices and responsible
for its daily operations (Woodstock, Kankakee, Rantoul, or Carbondale).
Qualifications:
You
must be fluent in Spanish and have reliable
transportation. You must be assertive, independent,
responsible, and sensitive to the legal problems faced by
migrant farmworkers. Cross-cultural experience is a
plus. Under the direction of supervising attorneys,
interns will do extensive outreach, interview and represent
farmworker clients, negotiate claims, advocate before federal
and state agencies, do legal research, help develop
litigation, and educate farmworkers about their rights. Common
legal problems include: false promises, wage violations,
run-down housing, unsafe working conditions, and denials of
public benefits.
Salary
& Benefits:
Students
in satellite offices earn a salary of $300 per week, plus
48.5¢ per mile for travel. Additional unpaid internships
are available in our main office in downtown Chicago.
