 Etiquette Quick Tip: Networking Event

When you are at a networking event or a cocktail party, hold your drink in your left hand so your right hand is free to shake hands.

If your beverage is in your right hand and you suddenly have to switch it to your left to shake a person's hand, then your hand will be cold, wet and clammy from the beverage glass.  A cold, wet and clammy handshake does not leave a good impression.

Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference:

You are cordially invited to participate in the Twenty-Second Annual Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference, at Northwestern University School of Law (downtown Chicago) on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Participation in the Conference is free and open to first, second, and third year law students from law schools in the states below, who have registered and paid for conference participation.

Illinois

Minnesota

Indiana

Missouri

Iowa

Nebraska

Kansas

Ohio

Michigan

Wisconsin

The Conference offers you opportunities to:

  • Interview with a variety of public interest and government employers for summer law clerk and entry-level attorney positions (employers will pre-screen resumes and select students to interview). Though most of the opportunities are unpaid or invite outside funding, there are positions that offer a stipend. Since most of the employers come mainly from the Midwest, you may find a position in the communities you seek to serve.
  • Meet with employers during Table Talk, a morning session where you can informally chat with employers about their organization's opportunities. Brochures, newsletters and other organizational literature from each employer will also be available.
  • Respond to on-line employer resume requests for internships (volunteer or paid), fellowship, and entry level positions. This service is available to you throughout the school year.

Student Registration:

To register to attend this conference, please send the following information to jessica.mehl@utoledo.edu by Dec. 8th.

This Week’s “Hot Job”:

Judicial Intern Opportunity Program

Applications for second-year law students will be accepted on October 12th, and December 1st for first-year students, in accordance with NALP guidelines.  The deadline for applying is December 31, 2009.

The Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is a full-time, six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year minority and/or financially disadvantaged law students who want to do legal research and writing for state or federal judges in participating cities. Participating judges are from Illinois; Texas; Miami, FL; Phoenix, AZ; Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA; and Washington DC. Students may indicate geographic location preferences on their applications. Interns will receive an award of $1,500.

The mission of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are financially disadvantaged and students who identify themselves as gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgendered. To assist you in identifying how you qualify for this program please click here.

The program is only open to students who have not previously participated as an intern in the program. Students applying to the program must submit a completed application, grades (second-year students), resume, legal writing sample and a statement of interest. Students may rank location preferences on their application; however students may not request particular judges or courts.

Screening interviews will be conducted to better determine student qualifications. Only qualified students will be sent on for judicial interviews. Judicial interviews will continue until all positions are filled.
