 Etiquette Quick Tip: The Bread Plate

The bread plate is located in the upper left corner of the place setting.  The bread plate is for bread and butter.  You may also place items from a relish tray on your bread plate, such as radishes and olives. The bread plate may not be used as a weigh station for things from your dinner plate that you do not care for, such as fish bones, gristle or icky mushrooms.  What happens on the dinner plate stays on the dinner plate.  In the absence of a bread plate, place your roll on the upper left side of your dinner plate.

This Week’s “Hot Job”:

Announcement of the 12th Annual

Reinberger Honors Program in Prosecution

Summer 2010

The College of Law is pleased to announce the availability of ten Reinberger Honors Program in Prosecution fellowships for College of Law students in the amount of $5,000 for summer of 2010. The goal of the Program is to attract outstanding students to careers in prosecution. The Program offers each student selected an opportunity to prosecute real criminal cases in the jurisdiction of his or her choice. Over the past 11 summers, more that one hundred twenty student participants have tried cases, negotiated pleas and interviewed victims and witnesses in over forty cities that include New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Fort Lauderdale, San Diego, Seattle, Los Angeles, Phoenix and most jurisdictions in the northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

The program will run from May 17 through July 16, 2010. During the first week, May 17 to May 21, law faculty and prosecutors from the Toledo area will train students at the Law Center in prosecutorial skills. For the next eight weeks students will work in prosecutor offices.

To be eligible to participate, a student must have successfully completed the course in Evidence prior to the summer of 2010 and must satisfy the requirements of the student practice rule of the jurisdiction in which the student plans to serve his or her placement. To qualify for an Ohio placement, the Ohio student practice rule requires that a student 1) have completed 2/3 of credit hours required for graduation 59 credit hours, and 2) have filed with the Supreme Court of Ohio, a $25 fee, a statement of agreement to supervise by a supervising prosecutor and an application for the Legal Intern Certification (see the Registrar’s Office). Michigan requires completion of the first year of law school without any further application process.

To apply, students should submit to Professor Robin Kennedy by email at robin.kennedy@utoledo.edu, or fax at 419-530-4447, or by hand delivery to Law Center Room 2008E, the following:

1) a cover letter stating the student’s interest in the program, the prosecutor office or locale (county, state, or city) to which he or she wishes assignment, and a statement of his or her criminal record (a criminal record does not necessarily disqualify a student from participation);

2) an unofficial law school transcript; and

3) a current resume.

Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2009. The tentative date for Interviews will be Wednesday, October 28, 2009 by Douglas Ray, Dean of the College of Law, Robin Kennedy, Associate Professor of Law, and Dean Mandross, Chief of the Criminal Division, Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office.

For more information contact Associate Professor Robin Kennedy at 419-530-2944 or at
