H. Terrence Smith was the network executive of Mercy Physician Enterprise for Mercy Health Partners, a regional system of seven hospitals and related entities in Northwest Ohio, from 2007 -2011. He was responsible for physician manpower strategy, practice acquisitions, physician recruitment, and employed physician practice operations.
Mr. Smith was General Counsel for Mercy Health Partners from 1996-2009, and Senior Vice President from 2000. Among his responsibilities were coordinating and providing oversight for all in-house and outside legal and risk management services; providing legal advice to the Board of Trustees, regional CEO, and regional executive staff; serving as legal representative on transactional teams for mergers, acquisitions, affiliations, and joint ventures; providing advice and guidance on litigation, governance, policy development, human resource, medical staff, managed care, strategic planning, legislation, and other matters; and conducting contract negotiations, dispute resolution, regulatory issues, and internal investigations. Mr. Smith served on internal boards and committees, and coordinated the activities of the Audit and Corporate Responsibility Committee of the Board of Trustees. He was the executive responsible for the corporate compliance program at Mercy. Prior to his role with Mercy, he was General Counsel for St. Vincent Medical Center.
Before joining St. Vincent, Mr. Smith was a health care attorney at Dykema Gossett in Detroit, Michigan, and an associate with Warner, Norcross, and Judd in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He served as a law clerk for the Honorable Benjamin Gibson, United States District Judge for the Western District of Michigan. Mr. Smith is an MBA graduate, with high distinction, of the University of Michigan, a graduate of Harvard Law School, and a graduate of the University of Detroit-Mercy.
As Distinguished Practitioner in Residence, Mr. Smith mentors students interested in health law careers, participates in health care careers presentations, and teaches a course entitled Health Care Compliance and Governance.
